The following quote from New York magazine's Reasons to Love New York issue really resonated with me:
"I love that my grandparents could build a life and a family in this city but not in their own country. That they would then move out to the suburbs and watch me go right back in to do it for myself, in the same place where my family began." -Shauna Rushner
It's so funny how a love for the city seems to skip a generation. My grandparents grew up in East Harlem and then moved to the suburbs of Connecticut, but my grandmother was never comfortable when she was too far away from the city. She used to say that she would begin to feel uneasy when she was on the train and started to see the power lines above ground. She was such a city girl, she never even learned to drive and took a taxi everywhere! But my father, who grew up in the suburbs, has never really liked New York. And although he likes to come visit, by the end of the day he is itching to drive back home. I wonder if my future kids will want to live in the woods like their grandpa...if there are any woods left by then.
