Greenwich Village: 1970s to Today

Gothamist turned my attention to a site with some beautiful photos of 1970s New York. Using Google Maps, I've tried to compare the photos side-by-side with what each scene looks like today. Some of the angles are a bit off, but I did the best I could.

Greenwich Avenue & West 10th Street
According to New York Songlines, these buildings (the tall brick one right next to the Jefferson Market Library was the Women's House of Detention) were demolished three years after the photo was taken, and turned into the garden that's there today.

Christopher Street & Seventh Avenue South
As you can see, Village Cigar is still there almost four decades later.

Sixth Avenue & West Fourth Street
This is the exact corner where I chatted with Suze Rotolo at one in the morning about three years ago. Apparently Bob Dylan used to live in the building right next door at the time he was dating her...weird.

Edward Hopper's Bleecker Street

Even though Edward Hopper has been my favorite painter since I was in third grade, I had no idea that his painting "Early Sunday Morning" may have been based on buildings along Bleecker Street. That's actually much of the reason I love his work, because his paintings remind me of some of my favorite places, like Block Island, Pennsylvania and New York City, even if they're not actually of those places.
